It is time for the blogger’s Christmas  Wishlist.  These past two years several companies have produced some topnotch equipment for anyone who is a blogger or thinking about getting into producing videos.  As we head into Black Friday and the Christmas season, here is a list of items anybody who is vlogger would love to have under their Christmas tree in 2019.

1) GoPro 8 GoPro was the leader in last’s years rush to introduce new vlogging cameras for the 2018 Christmas season. The GoPro 7 Black was the device that saved the company, will the GoPro 8 repeat that feat?  With the availability of the GoPro 8 being the first of October, all the reviews are not fully in but the majority seem to be happy with the improvements made.

  • HyperSmooth 1.0 is now 2.0 and covers all frame rates.
  • The plastic case is dead, with the mount now built into the bottom of the camera.
  • Livestreaming is now 1080p and includes YouTube
  • Auto-leveling of footage when you have off-kilter footage.
  • Attachments which they call mods which cost extra $$
  • Media mod with shotgun mic, mic port, and HDMI port ( 79 USD)
  • Light Mod -200 lumen light which is waterproof to 1 meter (49 USD)
  • Display Mod – flip-out 2” color display screen display  (79 USD)

2) Canon G7X Mark III

When asked to pick the most popular vlogging camera on YouTube the Canon G7X would be the one. Is it the best, no just the most popular. With Instagram and vertical video being popular, the camera can shot vertical just by tilting the camera sideways. Be warned this camera is priced on the high side.

  • While still some autofocus issues still exist, there are improvements over the original and the Mark II.
  • Refined body design making the camera more comfortable to hold
  • Touchscreen with Quick Menu
  • Better battery life
  • Vertical rotation option
  • Still no 4K video
  • Retails about 750 USD

3) DJI Osmo Pocket Handheld

The main reason why vloggers like gimbals are they work better than the stabilization software that is built into cameras.  Add that with its size and DJI has a winner here. This is my personal favorite, something I have added to my own blogger’s Christmas wishlist.

  • Its lightweight and portability make this the smallest 3-axis stabilized the handheld camera.
  • Touchscreen with Quick Menu
  • Better battery life
  • Vertical rotation option
  • Still no 4K video

4) DJI Osmo Action Cam

With GoPro introducing their Hero 7 Black last year, DJI came out with their own action cam and did GoPro one better

  • Dual screens are mandatory from a vlogger’s perspective to stay in the shot.
  • RockSteady which is their version of HyperSmooth
  • Waterproof to 11 meters
  • Shoots 4K at 60 fps
  • Slow-motion & Timelapse options
  • Retails for 270 USD

5) DJI Mavic 2 Pro

The Mavic 2 represents the best blend sports tracking and all-around cinematography drone but this all comes at a higher price than the original Mavic Pro.

  • Now Foldable and thus more Portable
  • Up to 31 mins of flight time
  • Omnidirectional obstacle sensing
  • Shoots 4K at 30 fps
  • Twice as big CMOS sensor than original Mavic pro
  • Improved active tracking
  • Retail price 1449 USD

6) DJI Mavic Mini

The Mavic Mini is really replacement model for the DJI Spark which was introduced in 2017.  Being a lighter drone than the Spark it was able to avoid the drone owner registration requirement of the United States and Canada.

  • Collapsible arms make it more portable.
  • Up to 30 mins of flight time vs the Spark with only 15
  • Lack of obstacle avoidance sensors only on the bottom
  • 3-axis gimbal
  • Shoots 2.7K @ 30 fps
  • 1080p @ 60 fps vs the Spark @ 30
  • Max range is 4 km vs the Spark 2 km
  • Retail price 416 USD

If I was just starting out making videos and could only pick one of these items off of the vlogger’s Christmas 2019 wishlist. I would problem go with the DJI Osmo Pocket handheld.  I would pick that over the Canon G7X ( my second choice) because blogging or vlogging in public is getting harder and harder. I have learned that with people the bigger the camera the more they freak out. A lot of stores and public places do not allow video cameras but with the DJI Osmo Pocket Handheld, you could fly under the radar. Not only is the portability cool but its size alone, being able to put it your pocket says you can take it just about anywhere.  If you have someone who is just starting out blogging or creating videos, the DJI Osmo Pocket handheld would make the perfect gift. Okay, readers get your Christmas 2019 wishlist together and comment below.
